Residence permit and next steps

How to apply for a residence permit

Once you have been offered a place on a Lund University programme or course and paid the first instalment of your tuition fee (if you are a non-EU/EEA student), the next step is to apply for a residence permit. It is important that you do this as soon as possible, as the process can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Please note that when accepted to studies in Sweden lasting more than three months, you should not apply for a visa to come to Sweden. Instead, you should apply for a residence permit for studies.

You apply for a residence permit online at the Swedish Migration Agency websiteThe fastest way to get your residence permit application processed is to submit a complete application online.

If you are applying for a first-time residence permit, you must present your passport at a Swedish Embassy abroad. Please note that you must present your passport at a Swedish Embassy with a migration section. Depending on which country you are from, you may also need to visit the Swedish Embassy in your home country to give your biometric data (fingerprints and photo). You apply online for both yourself and any accompanying family members (spouse and/or children).
