In the course, you will work with mechanics, the properties of gases, optics, and interactions between atoms and light. You will also be introduced to phenomena such as lasers and see examples of how physics is used at the research facilities in Lund.
The course provides both theoretical and practical training. In the laboratory sessions, you will learn how to collect and analyze data, perform simple calculations, and get an introduction to using Python to present results. You will also learn about laboratory safety and academic integrity.
The course is the first course you will take in the Bachelor's programme in Physics or Astrophysics. It can only be taken by programme students. It stretches throughout the entire semester and is taken in parallel with courses in mathematics. The course is taught in English, but you can be examined in Swedish if you wish.
Lectures, problem solving, quizzes and assignments lead up to a written exam, with the option of a voluntary oral interview for those who wish to reach a higher grade.
The laboratory sessions give you practice in planning experiments, analyzing measurement data, and laboratory safety. You will gain experience in writing lab notes and using Python to present your results, which you report in a written lab report.
You will also participate in a seminar with a group presentation on the applications of physics, as well as a workshop on learning and plagiarism with a short self-reflection. The laboratory sessions, seminar and workshop are compulsory.
Prerequisites
General requirements and studies equivalent to Swedish Upper Secondary School courses Physics 2/Physics level 2, Chemistry 1/Chemistry level 1 and Mathematics 4 (or older course Mathematics D)/Mathematics further level 2
