Application dates

This course is designed for international students who want to start learning Swedish in a simple and structured way. You don’t need any previous knowledge of the language. Over the course of the term, you’ll build basic skills in speaking, writing, listening, and reading Swedish.

The course follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and helps you reach level A1, which means you’ll be able to understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases.

You’ll study vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and sentence structure. You’ll also explore a few cultural aspects of Swedish society – like traditions and customs – through short texts and conversations.

Course literature

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

This is a distance course taught online using Canvas and Zoom. You’ll take part in live lectures, practical exercises, and interactive activities.

The course runs at 25% pace, which means you’ll need to dedicate around 10 hours per week to keep up with the workload. It’s just as demanding as other university courses, so plan your time carefully.

While this course doesn’t count towards a degree at Lund University if you already meet the Swedish language requirement, it’s a great first step if you’re planning to live, work, or study in Sweden.

It can also prepare you for further Swedish language studies and help you feel more confident in everyday situations – whether you're chatting with locals, applying for jobs, or continuing your education.
