You will learn to use mathematical thinking tools, algorithms, and methods to solve complex problems. You will develop your ability for abstraction, analytical thinking, and logical reasoning. You will gain more than just computational skills; you will learn to use mathematical theory to calculate more efficiently, and sometimes to avoid calculations altogether. When needed, the power of thought is complemented by numerical computations and simulations.
The programme offers a wide range of courses in mathematics, mathematical statistics, numerical analysis, and computational science. These can be combined with courses in natural sciences, engineering, economics, finance, social sciences, or the humanities.
Teaching is in English. Half of the study places are reserved for international admission. You can study parts of the programme abroad. Lund University has exchange agreements with universities around the world.
The programme includes a high proportion of teacher-led instruction. You will receive training in both oral and written communication. Group work and seminars provide valuable experience in collaboration and discussion. During the first semester we offer a mentoring programme with experienced undergraduate students.
The first part of the programme covers analysis in one and several variables, foundations of algebra, linear algebra, mathematical statistics and probability theory. These courses constitute the theoretical core that is fundamental to applied mathematics, statistics, mathematical physics, economics and many other areas.
After completing the compulsory courses students are offered a wide range of courses in pure mathematics, mathematical statistics and numerical analysis. Discrete mathematics, number theory, abstract algebra, topology, ordinary differential equations, complex analysis, differential geometry are some of the main areas in pure mathematics that are available within this course module.
Courses in mathematical statistics, probability theory and scientific computing provide the balance between mathematical theory and practical applications. Most students choose to combine mathematics with physics, computer science or economics.
Your Bachelor's degree project may be undertaken in pure mathematics, mathematical statistics, or numerical analysis. The project may be theoretical in nature, but it can also be carried out in an applied area in cooperation with an industrial partner.
Mathematicians are needed in a wide range of contexts. Mathematics is inherent in a manifold of technical and scientific achievements and plays a special role as an exact science with emphasis on quantitative aspects. Today's advancements in science and technology, medicine and pharmacology, economics and finance would not have been possible without mathematics.
There is a growing demand for people who can structure and analyse the increasing volumes of data being produced and stored. The growth of the information society has led to an ever-greater need to understand and make predictions about events and issues across many sectors of society. A thorough mathematical education provides the tools for such tasks.
Prerequisites
General requirements and studies equivalent of course Mathematics 4/D from Swedish Upper Secondary School.
Selection criteria
In the early international admissions round seats are allocated entirely through the general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate. In the later national admissions round seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 66 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %. The University board has decided that applicants with equal merits (in the GPA group) should be separated by the use of a valid result from the Swedish national university aptitude test.
Computers in the programme
The programme requires that you have access to a computer, preferably a laptop, on which you can install software mainly provided by the University, such as Microsoft 365, CAD/CAM and development environments for Python, Matlab or other computational tools. It can be either a Windows computer or a Macintosh computer. On some courses you may need to buy or rent your own software.
