Outline

The Bachelor’s Programme in Mathematics has a clear yet flexible structure that gives you considerable freedom to shape your studies according to your interests. The programme consists of:

  • compulsory courses (75 credits)
  • alternative compulsory courses (30 credits)
  • elective courses (up to 60 credits, of which at least 30 credits must be taken outside mathematics)
  • a degree project (15 credits). The degree project may be carried out in mathematics, numerical analysis, or mathematical statistics.

The compulsory courses are taken during the first year and provide a solid mathematical foundation. These courses are listed separately under Year 1.

The alternative compulsory courses give you substantial freedom to choose your direction. From semester 3 onwards, you can select from a wide range of courses in mathematics, numerical analysis, and mathematical statistics. Through these choices, you build your academic profile and ensure that you meet the prerequisites for the specialisation you wish to pursue. Since many courses are offered only once per year, it is important to plan your choices in relation to the course schedule.

Elective courses allow you to broaden or deepen your studies. At least 30 credits must be taken in a subject outside mathematics. Many students choose physics, computer science, or economics, but you may select courses from across the entire university. Elective courses are also an opportunity to complement your profile and strengthen your eligibility for the degree project.

The degree project (15 credits) is completed at the end of the programme and may be carried out within mathematics, numerical analysis, or mathematical statistics. The project may be theoretical or applied and is chosen in consultation with a supervisor. To be eligible, you must have taken courses that build the specialisation you intend to finish with.

Summary of specialisation requirements

  • Mathematics: at least 90 credits of MAT courses, including the compulsory courses from Year 1.
  • Numerical Analysis: at least 90 credits in mathematics in total, of which 22.5 credits must be in numerical analysis.
  • Mathematical Statistics: the compulsory courses, MASC01, an additional 15 credits in statistics, and at least one of the courses Linear Analysis or Discrete Mathematics (see the Year 2 course list).

Your course choices in Years 2 and 3 determine which specialisation you qualify for - which is why it is important to make deliberate and well considered choices based on the direction you want to pursue.
