The Bachelor’s Degree Project marks the final step of your studies in mathematics and gives you the chance to immerse yourself in a topic you find inspiring. You choose a subject area and are assigned a supervisor who works within that field. In consultation with your supervisor, you formulate and carry out a project plan. The plan may, for example, be based on a specific research question or a thematic focus for a literature study. We recommend that you contact the director of studies and the student counsellor before applying to discuss available project directions and find an option that matches your interests and background.

The project trains your ability to read and evaluate mathematical literature, apply methods you have learned during your studies and communicate your results in a clear and engaging way. Along the way, you gain insight into mathematical thinking and discover how mathematics contributes to scientific and societal development. The degree project demonstrates your readiness for the next stage of your academic journey and strengthens your confidence in working with complex ideas.

You work independently with support from your supervisor, and your project develops through regular discussions, reading and structured writing. Early in the course, you create a project plan together with your supervisor that outlines your topic, tasks and timeline. Depending on your chosen subject, your project may involve a literature study, problemsolving work or a combination of both.

Your studies are framed by a shared seminar series for all science students completing their degree projects at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. The seminars introduce scientific writing in English and Swedish, popularscience communication, academic integrity and the use of library resources. They also explore perspectives on sustainability and related societal questions that support responsible scientific practice. You present your ideas, receive feedback and learn how to communicate mathematics to different audiences. The course concludes with a written report, a popularscience summary and an oral presentation at a public seminar, together with the opportunity to review another student’s work.

The degree project prepares you for further studies in mathematics and related fields and provides experience that is valuable in future professional roles in research, technology, finance, and the public sector. Many students continue on to master programmes, where the degree project offers a solid foundation for further specialisation.

During the work, you will have developed the knowledge required to plan and carry out a larger project, to work independently with mathematical literature, and to deepen your understanding of central mathematical methods and reasoning.

You will also have strengthened your ability to reflect on your own learning and to identify the knowledge you wish to build upon. In doing so, you will also have developed the abilities that employers appreciate — formulating clear questions, analysing ideas, evaluating information, and presenting well-founded conclusions with precision and confidence.

Entry requirements

General and at least 90 credits in pure mathematics, and English course 6/B. (Dependent on the specialisation of the degree project, additional course requirements can be specified by the supervisor)

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 20 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 10 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 70 %.

are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
