The liver is the largest organ in our body and is essential for detoxifying our blood and it plays major roles in glucose and lipid metabolism. Recent data suggests that up to 30% of the population suffers from liver diseases including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and alcohol-use disorders. Liver disease is also connected to diabetes and obesity, which will have substantial impact on our society. We are studying glucose and lipid metabolism in the liver and other organs to find new therapeutic avenues to treat these diseases. Strong emphasis is placed on investigations of the mechanistic basis of liver disease to identify new therapeutic targets as well as biomarkers.
