In this master’s programme you will explore how novel technological advancements can be used to improve health through the development of innovative diagnostic tools, new treatment strategies, and new knowledge. You will gain the knowledge and skills needed to work as a biomedical engineer in hospitals, academia, or industry. The courses cover a broad range of topics, allowing you to tailor your studies to your own interests.

The aim is to educate engineers who can contribute to improved health and healthcare by developing and translating new technologies into clinical practice. Graduates gain expertise in interdisciplinary collaboration, regulatory frameworks, and the development and implementation processes of medical technology. This provides the specialised competence required for careers in research, established MedTech companies, and innovation-driven start-ups.

The programme is offered by LTH, Lunds Tekniska Högskola (The Faculty of Engineering at Lund University). LTH has a strong research environment in the field, where the Engineering Health profile area brings together over 200 active researchers and provides a strong foundation for the programme. The specialisations within the master's programme are closely linked to the current pillars of Engineering Health, where LTH researchers are highly competitive internationally.

The programme is new and will be offered for the first time in the autumn semester of 2027. It is based in Lund. Information about entry requirements, applications, and admissions will be published during autumn 2026.

Lund University has excellent resources and gives you the opportunity to learn from world-leading researchers. All teachers hold a PhD or higher and are actively engaged in research. The courses are kept to a high international standard.

The programme features both theoretical and practical learning. You will take part in group assignments and presentations.

As a student, you gain close access to clinical environments, research infrastructure, and opportunities to collaborate with industry.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering with research groups in biomechanics, biomedical signal processing, nanobiotechnology, neural interfaces, and ultrasound is strongly involved in the programme. The department has a long history of close collaboration both with hospitals and industry, and several start-up companies have emerged from research conducted by the teaching staff on the programme. 

You can choose between four tracks, each with different compulsory courses.

The programme addresses the global need for advanced healthcare solutions. As populations age and healthcare demands grow, the sector faces challenges that require new technological approaches. By combining engineering and medicine, such solutions enable earlier diagnoses and personalised care and help improve quality of life and increase life expectancy worldwide. 

The Department of Biomedical Engineering are part of the Lund innovation district, a life science ecosystem where academic engineering intersects with clinical practice and business incubation. This ecosystem includes several core entities such as the Skåne University Hospital, where researchers and clinical staff work on medical projects together, the Biomedical Centre, which is Lund University's core hub for basic medical research, as well as Medicon Village and Ideon Science Park,bringing together thousands of researchers and entrepreneurs.

This integration between academia, healthcare and industry creates a learning environment that connects theory with real-world medical challenges and gain insight into how biomedical innovations are developed and implemented. You develop the ability to translate research into clinical practice and to work across disciplinary and sector boundaries.These skills are highly valued in careers within medical technology, healthcare innovation, and biomedical research and development.
