This programme gives you a clear humanities-based perspective on European studies, which is something unique to Lund University. It is designed for you who want to understand Europe from a broad cultural viewpoint and use that knowledge in careers connected to the European cultural sector, politics, or communication across Europe.

The programme gives you a strong theoretical foundation and the tools you need to analyse important issues in today’s Europe. You learn how identities are created on local, regional, national and European levels. You also study how communication works across borders, how mobility through migration, travel and business can create cultural tensions, and how key values, such as religious tolerance and freedom of speech, interact and collide in Europe today. The programme helps you understand and explain the cultural and communicative forces that shape Europe.

The teaching includes lectures, seminars, workshops, group work, oral presentations and research proposal designs. The lectures are given by qualified lecturers with exemplary research and teaching records, as well as by guest speakers from both academia and industry. Academically, the programme also benefits from the presence of the Centre for European Studies, a research-focused network across Lund University.

You will learn to:
  • understand European culture, history, and how identities are formed
  • understand how EU institutions work and how they are governed
  • explore EU policies on culture and communication
  • develop practical skills in project management and communication.

Throughout your studies, you work with topics such as European values, migration, religion, cultural encounters, and cross-border communication. The programme gives you the theoretical tools and practical skills you need to both analyse Europe today and to play a role in shaping its future.

Our programme proposes a practical approach to prepare you for future employment by introducing concepts and skills of project management through a specially designed course, targeting interaction with European institutions. You will also have the opportunity to go on internship and thereby gain contacts that can lead to future employment.

European studies will prepare you for a wide range of careers, not only in Sweden, but also Europe and beyond. You will leave the programme with excellent skills in analytical thinking, project management and presentation, in addition to your in-depth knowledge of European countries and EU institutions. Graduates have found work in European institutions (local, regional and supranational), in private companies, as well as in think-tanks. Possible career opportunities include project management in institutions dealing with European culture and communication, analysis and consultancy in publishing, translation and media businesses directed to a European audience and dealing with cross-cultural communication. Some of our graduates choose an academic career path by pursuing doctoral studies.
