Fine Arts - Master Programme
Start
Autumn 2026
Duration
2 years
Level
Master's
Language
English
Place of study
Malmö
The programme builds on your artistic practice and gives you the opportunity to develop an independent and professional artistic career. The teaching is characterised by the Malmö Art Academy's’ feminist and experimental pedagogy. The pedagogy advocates for a horizontal relationship between students and teachers. This is expressed, among other things, through studio visits that you as a student manage. The discussions are based on where you are in your process.
You can move freely between different artistic expressions or immerse yourself in a specific technique, with individual guidance from active artists and professors.
The programme combines individual artistic work with elective courses in embodiment, technique, art history and theory. You will be trained to reflect on, formulate and design your own projects. You will also gain experience of professional presentation through a solo exhibition and an oral presentation. There you will show and discuss your work with an audience and experts. The focus is on creative text work, critical reflection and your ability to work independently as an artist.
The programme has a distinct international character. Lectures and collaborations with visiting artists, curators and researchers from around the world are part of everyday life at the school, and we also have exchange agreements with art schools in many different countries.
During your studies, you will work continuously in your own studio. You will be given time and space to develop ideas, test techniques and shape projects that reflect your artistic direction. Individual supervision is combined with elective courses and workshops that stimulate your experimentation and critical thinking. Through supervision, practical experimentation and critical reflection, you will develop your artistic voice and gain a solid foundation for artistic work.
You will have access to the school's workshops, which are staffed by experienced technicians and teachers who will help you work safely and professionally. There are workshops for:
- wood
- metal
- ceramics
- analogue and digital photography
- video and film (16mm), and
- plaster.
Studio work is complemented by courses and workshops in technique, embodiment and theory. The course selection vary and reflect the interests of the students and the ongoing projects of the teachers. This gives you the opportunity to create an education that follows your artistic direction, while supported in trying out new expressions and methods.
The programme provides space for long-term processes and concrete presentations of art projects, which trains you to plan, implement and communicate your work professionally throughout your education. In connection with your degree, you will present a solo exhibition in one of the school's galleries.
You will leave the programme with a strong artistic identity, independence in your work and the ability to act professionally in the field of art. The programme also prepares you for postgraduate studies and strengthens your position for continued international projects, exhibitions and professional activities as an artist.
Teaching is largely conducted in English and prepares you for a professional career in art both in Sweden and abroad.
When applying for this programme, you need to submit work samples.
