The Master’s Programme in Human Geography provides an in-depth understanding of how societies evolve and change in relation to place, environment and global processes. You gain a broad analytical perspective on key issues such as sustainability, inequality, urbanisation and climate change.
The programme is designed for students who already hold a degree in Human Geography, or a closely related subject, and who wish to deepen their knowledge through advanced studies in geographic theory, research methodology and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Students from all over the world take part in the programme, creating a stimulating international learning environment. Teaching is carried out by internationally recognised researchers who address current topics in spatial planning, environmental analysis, globalisation and social justice. You will gain the tools to understand and contribute to solutions for today’s major geographic and social challenges.
Throughout the programme, you will develop the ability to address complex societal challenges through critical thinking and independent analytical work – skills that are essential both in professional life and in research.
During your studies, you will experience how theory meets practice – through study visits, fieldwork, lab exercises and research projects. You are also prepared to conduct advanced research projects, culminating in your Master’s thesis.
The programme combines theoretical depth with practical application in the field and analytical work. Teaching includes lectures, seminars, field exercises and project work based on current research.
In the first year, you build a solid foundation in human geography theory, philosophy of science and research methods, including GIS and field-based methodologies. You learn how geographical perspectives can be applied to issues ranging from local planning to global environmental challenges.
In the second year, you tailor your studies to suit your interests. You can choose elective courses, undertake an internship, or study abroad. The programme concludes with an independent Master’s thesis, allowing you to explore a topic you are passionate about in depth.
You will study at the Department of Human Geography at Geocentrum I in central Lund – a place that brings together lecturers, researchers and students from all over the world in a stimulating and international study environment.
This programme prepares you for advanced professional roles in analysis, planning, research, and strategic decision-making – in both national and international contexts.
During your second year, you have the flexibility to shape your own academic profile and specialise in an area that matches your career ambitions.
Graduates in Human Geography work on issues related to sustainable urban and regional development, environmental and land-use management, transport and mobility, globalisation, resource distribution and social justice. Potential employers include public authorities, private companies and non-governmental organisations.
The programme also provides a strong foundation for doctoral studies, and many graduates go on to apply for PhD research programmes in Human Geography or related disciplines.
