Machine Learning, Systems and Control - Master's Programme
Start
Autumn 2026
Duration
2 years
Level
Master's
Language
English
Place of study
Lund
In this master’s programme you get to explore how data-driven methods can be applied in a variety of fields such as self-driving cars, healthcare, energy optimisation, and manufacturing. You will learn how to combine techniques from statistical analysis, mathematics, signal processing, image analysis, and control theory to extract insights from large and complex datasets.
The programme is offered by LTH, Lunds Tekniska Högskola (The Faculty of Engineering at Lund University). It is a collaboration between the departments of Mathematics, Automatic Control, Computer Science and Electrical and Information Technology. Research and education are closely linked, and the four departments have a long tradition of successful cooperation.
Next to the faculty is Ideon Science Park, a lively environment with a long tradition of innovation in software, internet of things, telecommunication, energy and new materials.
The programme features both theoretical and practical learning. You will take part in group assignments and presentations.
You can choose between two tracks, each with slightly different compulsory courses. In Track 1, the additional compulsory courses are Machine Learning (7.5) and Monte Carlo Methods for Statistical Inference (7.5). In Track 2, they are Real-Time Systems (7.5) and Project in Systems, Control and Learning (7.5).
Both tracks also include a number of elective courses that support your interests in, for example, machine learning, control systems, image analysis, artificial intelligence or robotics.
Lund University has excellent resources and gives you the opportunity to learn from world-leading researchers. All teachers hold a PhD or higher and are actively engaged in research. The courses are kept to a high international standard.
There is a growing demand for experts in using advanced algorithms to analyse large datasets, leading to strong career prospects for graduates.
The programme provides you with a solid base for a career in both industry and academia. You gain the necessary skills for research and development in different areas of industry. The programme also provides a good foundation for PhD studies in the field.
The surrounding region is home to global companies such as Sony, Ericsson and Axis. Other companies close to Lund University include Volvo, DB Schneider, Tetra Pak and ARM Sweden. Many students start working with these companies after graduation or start their own company, sometimes with support from the Venture Lab business incubator.
In the near future, two large-scale research centres, ESS and MAX IV, will offer further opportunities for collaboration and career development.
Prerequisites
A Bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) or equivalent. Completed courses in mathematics (linear algebra, calculus in one and several variables, transforms and linear filtering) of at least 30 credits/ECTS as well as one completed course in mathematical statistics, one in computer programming or computer science and one in control engineering. English 6.
