Learn how news is created, the importance of the internet for democracy and the role of television. We examine how attitudes are shaped, culture is produced and how the media influence people's consumption and lifestyle.
You will be trained in source criticism, media theory and methods for conducting research, collecting information and analysing information transfer between individuals, groups and cultures. These skills are valuable in all industries. Knowing how to get your message across and how information flows work is indispensable, whether you are an engineer, an economist, a manager or an employee.
The Master’s Programme in Media and Communication Studies offers a critical approach to contemporary social, political and cultural issues in media and communications, covering theories of knowledge, power and social relations in national and transnational media environments.
A key principle of our education is to train primarily communication analysts and strategists, not information producers.
Courses are taught in Lund and connect with collaborative partnerships with NGOs and cultural organisations in the region. They involve a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops, including student presentations and group work. Assessments include academic essays, presentations and an academic thesis.
You will experience lectures, seminars, group work, and independent study. You analyse debates and problems in media engagement, democracy and cultural citizenship, media industries and creativity, gender, health and society, audiences, popular culture and everyday life. The courses and your independent research projects teach you diverse theoretical, conceptual, and empirical research tools.
All courses, key readings, lectures and seminars in the Master’s Programme in Media and Communication Studies are in English. You should be comfortable speaking English and writing full-length academic essays in English.
Campus Paradis: a central study environment in Lund
Campus Paradis is where most of Lund University's social science programmes are taught. The campus is centrally located in Lund, in a historic neighborhood. Many of the buildings here were formerly hospitals, which is why they have been given names such as Gamla kirurgen (Old Surgery) and Gamla barnsjukhuset (Old Children's Hospital). The buildings were constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries and are valuable from a cultural and historical perspective, giving the area a unique character.
Another thing that distinguishes Campus Paradis from other parts of Lund University is the proximity between different study environments, libraries, and cafés, all surrounded by lush greenery and pleasant outdoor areas. In the area, you will find the Social Sciences Library (Sambib) and the University Library (UB), where you can borrow course literature and find a quiet place to study. Next to Sambib is Micrologen, where you can easily heat up your own lunch box. On campus, you will also find Samvetet, where the student union for social scientists is located. There are two cafés here: Café Eden and Karnas café. Here you can have a coffee, eat lunch, or take a break between lectures. Since Campus Paradis is centrally located in Lund, you are also close to restaurants, other cafés, and the central station.
Students graduating from this programme will be prepared for professional opportunities in research-led careers, education, academic careers, media and cultural industries, national and international policy and production sectors, commercial and public service organisations, and NGOs.(Prel text).
Above all, graduates will have the critical skills necessary to evaluate and understand media in a range of professional and private spheres. The subject can be studied as a foundation for a degree in Journalism, Business Administration, Sociology or Graphic Design.
