Peace and Conflict Studies: War and Peace in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, strongly marked by its protractedness, is one of the most discussed and analysed in modern times. The course introduces different theoretical perspectives on war and peace and provides a deep understanding and insights into factors that drive the escalation of violence and the peace process in new directions.

Key topics include:

• Causes of the conflict: Identity, nationalism, religion, territory, and great power politics.
• The Middle East peace process: Different agreements, third-party peacebuilding, the roles of mediators, and why peace negotiations broke down.
• Conflict resolution: Peace visions and various territorial solutions, such as the two-state solution, confederation, and binational state.
• Gender perspectives: Women’s activism as well as the role of masculinities and femininities in ethno-national narratives.

The course includes lectures and mandatory seminars where you discuss and analyse critical aspects of the conflict in the past and present with your classmates. Assessment is based on an individual essay and active participation in seminars. All teaching and examinations are conducted in English.

General and 30 credits in Peace and Conflict Studies or Political Science. English 6/English Course B.

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at the application deadline (up to 165): 32 %.
