This course offers both a theoretical and practical introduction to molecular physics and spectroscopy. You will learn how molecules interact with electromagnetic radiation, with a focus on electric dipole transitions and Raman scattering.

We focus on diatomic and simple polyatomic molecules, and how their structure and properties – such as bond length, moment of inertia, and temperature – can be derived from spectra. You will also gain insight into selection rules, the Franck–Condon principle, term symbols, and various spectroscopic techniques covering the spectral range from microwave to X-ray.

The laboratory session involves computer simulations of molecular spectra, and you will also see demonstrations of emission spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence. This course is ideal for those who want to understand the role of molecules in science, industry, and society.

Teaching consists of lectures, a laboratory session, assignments, and demonstrations. You will analyse spectra, calculate molecular parameters, and practice interpreting data from different spectroscopic methods.

The laboratory session is compulsory and involves simulating and interpreting molecular spectra. The assignments are project-based and give you the opportunity to explore applications of molecular spectroscopy in more depth.

Assessment is based on a written exam, a lab report, and submitted assignments. Active participation in all compulsory components is required to pass the course.

Entry requirements

For admission to the course, knowledge is required equivalent 90 credits in natural sciences, including knowledge equivalent to FYSB24, Physics: Atomic and Molecular Physics, 7.5 credits. General entry requirments, English 6/B.
