“Overall, this distribution reflects a strategic breadth, in which technical, medical, social science and humanities perspectives are all incorporated into the University’s commitment to excellence and sustainable development,” says Erik Renström.

The record-breaking 2025 recruitment drive resulted in leading researchers from around the world choosing Lund University. The University is now launching a new initiative and is seeking a total of 14 international researchers in fields, including sustainability.

The recruitment is part of the Lund University Programme for Global Excellence, a university-wide initiative aimed at recruiting outstanding researchers to Lund University.

The initiative includes a certain focus on sustainability, reflecting Lund University’s top global ranking in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026.

"At a time when free research and education are under increasing pressure, Lund University remains steadfast in its commitment to academic freedom, international collaboration and high standards. Being ranked number one in the world in sustainability reflects the long-term values that characterise our work, as well as this initiative,” says Erik Renström, Vice-Chancellor of Lund University.

Strategic breadth in the initiative

The call for applications comprises a total of 14 positions. Four of these are linked to sustainability, and two positions combine a sustainability focus with particularly prioritised research areas.

The positions are distributed across 8 of Lund University’s 9 faculties: the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology, the Faculty of Engineering (LTH), the Lund University School of Economics and Management, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

“Overall, this distribution reflects a strategic breadth, in which technical, medical, social science and humanities perspectives are all incorporated into the University’s commitment to excellence and sustainable development,” says Erik Renström.

As part of the initiative, a new network for the recruited researchers – the Young Academy for Sustainability – will also be established. The network will be run by the Sustainability Forum, Lund University’s umbrella organisation for strategic support and coordination of sustainability issues.

The positions are open for applications until May/June 2026. Funding is provided through university-wide resources amounting to SEK 70 million. Additional funding may be contributed by departments and faculties.
