Why did you choose Lund University?

I was excited about Lund University because of the University’s close relationship to important port infrastructure related to new research I am conducting on ports and digital infrastructure. I am also extremely excited to connect with China studies scholars in Sweden. Further, I am excited to learn more about the growth of Sweden’s tech industry and tech regulations in relation to to my experiences researching these sectors in the United States and China.

Can you briefly describe your current research?

My research focuses on China’s global media and technology impact. I have written two books. The first book was Hollywood Made in China (University of California Press, 2017) focused on Chinese influence on the US media industries. The second book, Trafficking Data: How China is Winning the Battle for Digital Sovereignty (Oxford University Press, 2022), which focuses on Chinese global consumer data-gathering.

What will be your main research focus during your time at Lund University?

I am increasingly interested on global impacts on governance and technology sector development, with a new focus on global ports.
