The Faculty has been working for some time to bring the Malmö Art Academy, Malmö Academy of Music and Malmö Theatre Academy together. By bringing the various activities together, the aim is to create a more cohesive campus that strengthens both the core activities and the artistic identity.
“I am delighted that we now have a shared vision for a new fine and performing arts campus in Malmö. By bringing together its fine and performing arts programmes, Lund University is creating a distinct hub for art and culture. At the same time, we want to build on the creative energy that already exists in the area,” says Erik Renström, Vice-Chancellor of Lund University.
A natural base for a fine and performing arts campus
When the project in Varvsstaden was halted in 2024, the Faculty, together with the City of Malmö, drew up a letter of intent to continue working towards finding a new location for a fine and performing arts campus in Malmö.
Having explored various options, the Faculty has now concluded that the best conditions are found in and around the Academy of Music’s current premises in the Heleneholm area. The area is already home to the Academy of Music and several of the premises currently used by the organisation. By relocating the Art Academy and the Theatre Academy there as well, the need for new construction is reduced.
“The Heleneholm area is a natural base for a shared fine and performing arts campus and by establishing one there, the Faculty will contribute to local development, with artistic programmes and research playing an active role in the city’s evolution,” says Santino S. Resic, dean of the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts.
The aim of bringing all activities together on a single campus is to strengthen core operations and foster an interdisciplinary research environment.
“We are delighted that the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts wishes to remain in Malmö and that they see potential in Heleneholm. The great strength of Heleneholm is that the site combines an established artistic presence, good accessibility and potential for urban development. For Malmö, a consolidated campus could serve as a concrete example of culture-driven urban development – a place where education, professional cultural life, young Malmö residents and urban development can come together,” says Marcus Horning, director of urban planning for the City of Malmö.
