In bright sunshine - and with only a few raindrops - 290 doctoral graduates and 16 honorary doctors were conferred in hats and wreaths during Lund University’s grand ceremony, the doctoral degree conferment ceremony. At the same time, 48 jubilee doctors were also honoured.

This year’s doctoral conferment ceremony had to take a different route because the University main building is closed for renovation. Instead, the procession started from AF-borgen and followed a somewhat longer route past the University square, then past the University main building, and finally along the usual path to the Cathedral. This was no problem for those marching in the procession, however, as the sun was shining. However, on the way back from the Cathedral, a few drops of rain began to fall.

In a solemn ceremony at Lund Cathedral, the doctoral students who completed their doctoral studies in the past year and successfully defended their doctoral theses at Lund University then received their doctoral degree. At the ceremony, doctoral degrees were also conferred on the faculties’ honorary doctors. Doctors who completed their doctoral degrees 50 years ago became jubilee doctors.

One of the participants who received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Social Sciences is Professor Frank Biermann, in recognition of his pioneering contributions to the field of global environmental politics. He is currently a professor of Global Sustainability Governance at Utrecht University.

"I have had the privilege of working with researchers across many different research environments at Lund University for the past 25 years, and I sincerely hope to continue doing so for the next 25 years as well. Receiving this honorary doctorate also means that I will now be formally connected to the university, something I value deeply," says Frank Biermann.
