This master’s programme explores how architectural design can address contemporary societal challenges. You will develop the ability to design complex and innovative architecture by integrating materiality, structure and spatial order to create meaningful spaces for both individuals and communities.
The programme addresses contemporary issues such as environmental change, housing shortages and urban segregation, equipping you with the tools to approach these challenges creatively.
It also trains you in architectural design as a method for thinking and understanding, where architecture becomes a critical force in addressing social, economic, ecological and cultural issues.
The programme is offered by LTH, Lunds Tekniska Högskola, The Faculty of Engineering at Lund University. It benefits from the university’s strong international network and the dynamic Copenhagen–Malmö region, providing a broader context for your studies. Leading architects and designers are regularly invited as guest lecturers, and you will have opportunities to exhibit your work to a public audience.
The School of Architecture at Lund University offers state-of-the-art facilities, including personal workspaces, digital fabrication labs with 3D printers and laser cutters, and fully equipped workshops. The programme’s close ties to the architectural community provide a rich learning environment.
The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical training. You will engage in a mix of lectures, seminars, design studios and workshops. The teaching approach encourages critical thinking and creative problem-solving through design projects that reflect real-world challenges.
Workshops and critiques with invited guests – both local and international – are key elements of the learning process. You will work on advanced design projects individually and in teams, with continuous feedback from faculty and industry professionals. Study trips are integrated into the curriculum, offering insights into architectural practices in cities such as Copenhagen, Oslo and Amsterdam. Alternative assignments are provided for those unable to travel.
In the first semester, you will take courses in Advanced Architectural Design and Architectural Theory, along with a course on material and detail.
The second semester expands on these foundations with integrated design projects, including options like Climate Smart Architecture or Temporal Landscape.
In the third semester, you will specialise in one of five tracks: Dwelling and Space, Urban Shelter, Cultural Heritage Buildings, Sustainable Urban Dynamics, or Spatial Experiments.
The final semester is dedicated to your degree project, where you will develop a comprehensive architectural solution to a real-world challenge.
Graduating from this programme will give you the skills to work as an architect on a global market. You will be prepared to engage in both public and private projects, with a deep understanding of contemporary architectural theory and practice.
Alumni often secure positions in leading architectural firms, particularly in the Copenhagen–Malmö region, Stockholm, and internationally.
The programme’s strong industry connections and the opportunity to present your work in exhibitions and reviews will give you valuable professional exposure.
Many graduates also choose to pursue further research or specialise in areas such as sustainable design, urban planning or cultural heritage.
