This programme is designed for students who are passionate about food science and innovation. You will explore how food can be developed to promote health, combat malnutrition and obesity, and contribute to a sustainable future. A practise-oriented approach provides you with hands-on experience and industry insights to tackle global food challenges.

The programme covers a wide range of subjects, including food chemistry, food processing, surface and colloid chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, and food analysis. Students can also specialise in environmental and sustainability aspects of food production.

It's closely aligned with market needs and industry demands, with a strong emphasis on engineering sciences. You will learn from world-leading researchers and industry professionals, gaining insights into product development, food safety, and marketing strategies. Many courses involve practical projects, company visits, and guest lectures from professionals in the food sector.

Lund University has strong industry connections, and several research projects have led to successful companies such as Oatly, OptiCept, Veg of Lund, Probi, and Solve.

To succeed in the programme, it is recommended that you have a background in unit operations, thermodynamics, and laboratory skills from your bachelor's degree.

Innovation is at the heart of the programme, and you will have opportunities to work on real-world food technology challenges.

Courses in this programme combine theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring that you understand both why and how food science principles are applied. Many projects are highly product-focused and involve visits to local companies and collaborations with industry advisers who provide students with guidance throughout their projects.

You will gain broad expertise in food technology and nutrition, allowing you to address global food security challenges. Through discussions, debates, and presentations, you will also develop strong communication skills, which are essential for a successful career in the field.

The programme also provides you with the skills to optimise food processing conditions for high-quality food production. You will learn how to consider nutritional and sensory properties, raw material selection, convenience, energy efficiency, and sustainability in industrial food manufacturing.

The programme is offered by LTH, Lunds Tekniska Högskola (The Faculty of Engineering at Lund University).

Graduates from this programme have diverse career opportunities in food companies, research institutes, universities, and government authorities worldwide. Many works in product development, food safety, sustainability, and food processing, contributing to innovations that shape the future of the food industry.

Approximately 50% of graduates have found positions at companies such as Arla Foods, Tetra Pak, OptiCept, Albina Snacks, Glucanova, and AAK. Around 25% continue to doctoral studies, while others secure roles in the public sector or at research institutes.

With the increasing global demand for healthy, sustainable, and high-quality food products, this programme provides you with the skills and knowledge needed to make a meaningful impact in the industry.
