Employment conditions and benefits

Teaching staff work on the basis of annual hours rather than fixed weekly schedules. This gives you flexibility to plan your workload across the year.

Salaries are set on an individual basis. For new employees, the proposed salary is determined by the head of department. For professors, it is proposed by the vice-chancellor.

We are committed to your growth as an educator. From the beginning of your employment, you will receive structured training in higher education teaching and learning. This training is designed to strengthen your teaching skills and support your academic development.

If you are a permanent member of staff, you will also have access to advanced courses in academic teaching. These opportunities allow you to continue developing your teaching practice and contribute to shaping the future of higher education with us.

As an employee at Lund University, you have access to the same benefits as other public-sector employees in Sweden. These include:

  • Paid vacation: You are entitled to paid holiday each year, based on the length of your contract.
  • Healthcare and occupational health services: You have access to public healthcare and occupational health support through the University.
  • Wellness allowance and activities: You can use your yearly wellness allowance for health-promoting activities.
  • Parental leave: Sweden offers generous provisions for parental leave, and your employment contract can be extended accordingly.
  • Insurance and pensions: You are covered by staff insurance and pension contributions through your employment.

Career paths and promotion

The University follows a structured academic career pathway: from doctoral student to postdoctoral research fellow or associate senior lecturer, then to senior lecturer or researcher, and eventually to professor.
