The arts, culture and science in collaboration

Arts and culture are fundamental forms of knowledge in human societies. For a leading university, collaboration between the arts and the sciences is essential to stimulate creativity and propose innovative responses to contemporary challenges.

Culture is an active force that explores and expresses the human condition. It defines us as human beings, nurtures the imagination and can challenge our perception of the world.

Our society is facing complex challenges that require interdisciplinary collaboration. With its unique breadth of subject areas, Lund University is particularly well placed to facilitate creative encounters between the arts, culture and science – both within and beyond the University.

Lund University as a cultural university

At Lund University, the arts and culture form an integral part of the core mission. The University aims to promote expertise and knowledge in the arts and culture, encouraging collaboration with other fields of science.

The arts and culture strengthen the quality of education, the relevance of research and the University's role in society by contributing different perspectives, methods and forms of expression.

As a cultural university, Lund University is open to new forms of collaboration, inspiring teaching methods, cross-disciplinary programmes and pedagogical innovation.

The open university

The open arts and cultural activities at the University act as bridges between academia and the wider community. Through exhibitions, performing arts, public programmes and collaborative projects, they create meeting places where academic knowledge can be shared, discussed, questioned and reshaped in dialogue with society.

The open university is not only accessible in a formal sense, but also in its approach: open to society, to new voices and to unexpected encounters.

Cultural forum for arts and science

To advance the integration of arts and culture, Lund University has established a cultural forum for arts and science. The forum supports and inspires the faculties in developing research and education in collaboration with the arts and culture.

Lund University Cultural Council

The Cultural Council provides advice in the Vice-Chancellor's strategic work on the University's cultural engagement. It contributes to highlighting the University's role in culture and the importance of culture in societal development.
