Bedrock Geology: Sedimentary Geology and Basin Analysis

Description
Sedimentary basins are erosional remnants comprising hundreds to thousands of meters thick strata and preserved in regionally widespread, natural or fault-controlled depressions in the crystalline bedrock. They are represented from all tectonic environments and contain Earth’s deposits of coal, oil and gas. They are therefore of great economic importance. Within the geological basic research sedimentary basins are of paramount importance, because their strata are natural climate archives and contain the fossils we build knowledge about evolution and mass extinction on. Research on climate changes and sea level changes in the Earth's history requires in-depth knowledge of how to interpret and model the stratigraphic architecture of sedimentary basins.
Through lectures in sedimentary geology and field trips, the course gives an in-depth knowledge of various depositional environments and tectonic controls on sedimentary basins. You will get to practice modern techniques and methods used to adequately describe stratigraphic architecture and basin history, i.e. facies analysis, sequence stratigraphic analysis, geochemistry and geophysical investigation in boreholes. A regional or international excursion is an important part of the course in order to connect knowledge from lectures and exercises to natural rock exposures. The course is concluded with a literature-based, individual project essay in which you link your knowledge from the course and which constitutes an important part of the final grade.

Requirements and selection
Entry requirements
To be admitted to the course, students must have 90 credits in science studies, including 75 credits in geology.
Proficiency in English corresponding to English B/English 6 from Swedish upper secondary school.

Most of Lund University’s programmes require English Level 6 (unless otherwise stated under 'Entry requirements'). This is the equivalent of an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 90. All students must prove they meet English language requirements by the deadline, in order to be considered for admission.
