Båstad Masterclass - Composition (2025)

Description

The course will be held during the Båstad Chamber Music Festival, the last week of June. The course is free of charge. Accommodation and meals are available for a fee.

Course will take place 23-27th of june 2025, with 22nd of june as arrival day. More info about the admission down below.

The course is aimed at composers and music students who want to develop their composition skills and receive constructive criticism about their works. Topics such as composition, form, instrumentation, analysis and notation will be covered. 

The teaching could be given both individually and in seminars depending on the circumstances, and you also have time allocated during the week to work on your compositions and other assignments. There will also be opportunities to attend the chamber music concerts that are held during the festival. 

Information will be sent out in good time to those applicants who have been admitted. 

Admission to the course 

Admission is based on an assessment of work samples submitted by the applicant: 

• 3-4 scores (pdf) of your own choice, preferably different ensemble types (chamber, choir, orchestra)
• sound samples (mp3). Both live and midi recordings are welcome but no Finale or Sibelius programme files 
• a short CV including information about former studies/teachers and a few words what you expect from the master class in composition

Work samples should be uploaded on the 1st of april at the latest (but note that formal application at www.antagning.se must be made not later than 15th of March, then you have a few days to complete your work samples after your application). Note that you need to BOTH apply at antagning.se and submit work samples.

ROLF MARTINSSON serves as professor of composition at the Malmö Academy of Music and is a sought after pedagogue and one of the internationally leading Swedish composers. His collaborations include world leading artists and orchestras such as Lisa Larsson, Anne Sofie von Otter, Håkan Hardenberger, Martin Fröst, Andris Nelsons, Alan Gilbert, Manfred Honeck, Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra at the most prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw, Musikverein, Gewandhaus, Royal Festival Hall, Elbphilharmonie and Berlin Philharmonie.

Entry requirements

General entry requirements as well as specific entry requirements: studied or had studied at Music Academy or the equivalent, at least 7.5 credits in composition, classical orientation, and approved work samples.

English language requirements

Most of Lund University’s programmes require English Level 6 (unless otherwise stated under 'Entry requirements'). This is the equivalent of an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 90.
