Contemporary Sociology of Law
Course · 15 credits
Description
The course consists of two parts. Module 1 develops your understanding of the sociology of law as a multidisciplinary research field. Module 2 focuses on the sites of engagement of the sociology of law within socio-legal traditions.
Module 1: The Multidisciplinarity of Sociology of Law
You learn about the multidisciplinary research tradition within the sociology of law. The lectures cover the rich tradition of sociology of law, its concepts and perspectives, and how related disciplines interrelate and reorient these in the study of sociology of law. We emphasise the ability to critically compare the various theories and disciplinary orientations of sociology of law.
Module 2: Sites of Engagement in Sociology of Law
In the second part you explore and analyse topical societal phenomena and social problems using theories of sociology of law. Major emphasis is placed on developing your ability to interrogate specific topic areas using socio-legal concepts and theories.
Course implementation
The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, exercises and seminars. In case of legitimate absence caused by accidents, sudden illness or similar events, students are given additional tasks to complete. This also applies to students who have missed class due to their duties as student representatives.
The assessment of each module is based on written assignments and active participation in seminars, including oral presentations. Absence approved by the lecturer is to be compensated for by a written assignment. Three opportunities for examination are offered in conjunction with the course.
