Courses and programmes – what's the difference
The word programme refers to a full degree programme consisting of several courses. A course is a stand‑alone module that can be studied either as part of a degree programme or on its own. Degree programmes usually run over a set period of one, two, three or four years. The duration of a course can range from a few weeks to a few months.

To apply for a Bachelor's programme, you must have completed upper secondary school.
To apply for a Master's programme, you need to have completed a Bachelor's degree. You can also apply if you are in your final year and will have completed your degree before the programme starts.
Students currently studying at a partner university that has a formal exchange agreement with Lund University or one of our faculties or departments, may be nominated to come for exchange studies over a period of one or two semesters at Lund University.
Students whose home university does not have a formal agreement with Lund University for exchange can instead consider our Study Abroad Swedish Language programme for a period of one or two semesters.
Universities, national scholarship programmes and organisations can also arrange tailor-made Study Abroad packages for students to study at Lund University. This could include a summer course, or a semester or year-long study period.
We offer a range of single-subject, stand-alone courses at Bachelor's and Master's level. Some Bachelor's courses are 'introductory' level and are open to all students who have finished upper secondary school studies. Other Bachelor's courses are 'continuation' level and are suitable for students who have previously studied the subject at the Bachelor's level.
Master's level courses are suitable for students who have previously studied the subject at Bachelor's level. Please note that a number of these courses are only available for students admitted to a full degree programme or for students coming through a formal exchange agreement.
We offer a small selection of distance learning courses and one full degree programme taught by distance. These studies have admission requirements and a formal admissions process.
We also offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) which are open to anyone interested in the subject. These courses have no admission requirements.
Students seeking to continue with doctoral (PhD) studies can apply for fully-funded doctoral positions (i.e. doctoral studentship or a doctoral study grant) which are advertised by the relevant department within a faculty. Advertisements for doctoral positions are posted on our job vacancy pages. Self-funded students can enquire about doctoral positions by contacting the relevant department directly.
Please note there is no set admission period or application process for doctoral studies. You follow the instructions in the specific announcement for the doctoral position and the instructions of the individual department.
Contract education are designed to meet specific workplace needs. These courses are specifically designed for people in working life, and is funded by the employer. Contract education is also known as commissioned education.
Courses can vary in length, from short courses lasting a day or two to longer programmes spread over several semesters.

For employers: Organise contract education at Lund University
In addition to contract education funded by employers, we offer capacity development programmes for professionals working with global challenges such as sustainability, innovation, and governance. Participation in these programmes are financed by external organisations.
We offer a Study Abroad Swedish language programme, designed for students interested in studying the Swedish language as a full-time course load.
Admitted students coming for other types of studies at Lund University (e.g. an exchange or a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme) are given opportunities to learn Swedish as part of our orientation/introduction activities and in cooperation with the Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) classes.
In addition, we offer close to 150 degree programmes at Bachelor's or Master's level that are taught in Swedish. International students who are proficient in Swedish may apply for studies taught in Swedish if they meet all requirements for admission, including Swedish language knowledge.
