The degree project is the final course in your Master’s program and gives you the opportunity to apply the knowledge you have gained during your studies. The project is often highly significant for your future career.
To be eligible to start a Master’s project, you must be enrolled in the Master’s program in Bioinformatics at Lund University and have completed the mandatory courses. You can choose to do a project for 30,45 or 60 credits.
The degree project is carried out within a research group, either at Lund University, at another university, or at a company. You are encouraged to find a project placement on your own and make the necessary contacts.
You will conduct an individual research project that is part of the ongoing research at your host institution. You will work independently and deepen your skills in project planning, literature search, data management, reproducible research, scientific writing, and presentation techniques.
Before the course begins, you and your supervisor must complete an admission form, including a brief project description that must be approved by your examiner.
At the start, you will write a project plan together with your supervisor. The project plan should include:
- an introduction with theoretical background and key references
- objectives
- methods
- a timeplan
You must systematically document your work in a README file and on GitHub or an equivalent platform. When half of the project time has passed, a mid-term review will be conducted. This is a self-assessment where you and your supervisor discuss and answer a set of questions to determine whether the project is progressing as planned and according to the timeline. The examiner is also invited to the GitHub repository, and an external opponent is appointed.
You will present your work through a written report and an oral presentation. This is followed by a discussion where you answer questions about your work. The examination committee, consisting of an examiner, an external opponent (often an expert in the research area), and your supervisor, then holds an internal discussion before the examiner decides on the grading.
