In this course, which is an elective course in the Master's program in Conservation Biology, you will learn how to set up various monitoring programs for organisms such as plants, insects, bats, or birds. You will gain a general understanding of how biological monitoring is used in society as well as in scientific contexts. You will also assess past surveys, learn to use various historical maps, understand how they differ, and how they can be used to gain knowledge about the current status of different natural areas. Additionally, you will learn specific methods for surveying different organisms both theoretically and practically in the field. This will provide you with a broad toolbox of methods that can be applied in both monitoring or survey work, for example in municipalities, or as a foundation when conducting scientific studies on wild plants and animals.
The course begins with a theoretical section on monitoring and how to monitor and survey different organisms. This is done through traditional lectures and seminars, as well as field excursions. In the second part of the course, you will apply the theoretical work in practice by constructing and conducting a monitoring plan for a habitat or organism of your choice, including several days of fieldwork. At the end of the course, during the examination part, you will be given an individual assignment where you will use the data collected throughout the course to write a report that simulates a real-world assignment. This report will be used for grading purposes.
