Sociology: Knowledge and Social Change examines how different forms of knowledge are created, spread, challenged, and used in different social contexts. You will study knowledge as social processes unfolding within and across the sciences, public discourse, policy, popular culture, and everyday life.

The course introduces theoretical perspectives and analytical tools from the sociology of knowledge and related interdisciplinary fields. You will explore topics such as environmental and social issues, political and economic ideas, ethics and spirituality, and contrasts between knowledge, belief, and conspiracy theories.

This course is open to all qualified students and is also a compulsory part of the Master’s Programme in Sociology.

The Department of Sociology

The course is offered by the Department of Sociology in the picturesque Paradiset campus area in Lund. The building combines modern lecture halls, group rooms, and study spaces – just a short walk from the Social Sciences Library (Sambib) and the University Library (UB), several popular cafés and the city centre.

Throughout the course, you will develop an advanced understanding of how knowledge is produced and used within different social contexts. By the end of the course, you will be equipped to engage critically with contemporary discussions about truth, expertise, and the role of knowledge in society.

Teaching methods

The course combines lectures and seminars, where active participation is expected. Seminars provide opportunities for discussion, critical reflection, and the development of analytical skills. Attendance at seminars is normally compulsory.

Assessment is based on an individual take‑home exam, where you demonstrate your understanding of key concepts and your ability to apply sociological theory to real‑world issues.

This course is valuable for students aiming for careers or further studies that involve analysing complex social issues, interpreting information critically, or understanding the role of knowledge in public life. It serves as a strong foundation for advanced studies within sociology or related disciplines.
