Nomination and Application Procedures
This section outlines the key steps and timelines for nominating and applying for university-wide exchange studies at Lund University.
Please note that course availability and restrictions may vary between faculties.
Autumn semester and academic year: 15–31 March
Spring semester: 15–30 September
Nomination instructions are sent to our partner universities shortly before the nomination period.
Autumn semester: 1–15 April
Spring semester: 1–15 October
When the application period is about to open, nominated students receive an email with the log in details required for the online application.
All supporting documents must be in English and uploaded as enclosures in the application. Requirements may vary between faculties. Students are expected to pay close attention to this.
Mandatory Documents:
- Official Transcript of Records (Bachelor and Master level). Including an explanation of grades
- Statement of Purpose
- CV
- List of ongoing courses – mandatory if not listed in the Transcript of Records
- Passport copy
- Eligibility form – mandatory when applying for courses in engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, and when applying for courses with prerequisites at the Faculty of Science and the School of Economics and Management.
Other Documents:
- Portfolio – mandatory for Architecture, Industrial Design, Music and Fine Arts
- Proof of language proficiency for studies in languages other than English
Find the Academic calendar on the website:
- The nomination is completed by student’s home university.
- An email with login details for the application system (SoleMove) is sent to student.
- Student submits application, including all required supporting documents.
- A Letter of Acceptance is sent to student via email through SoleMove.
- Student use the Letter of Acceptance to apply for a Swedish Residence Permit for Studies (if required).
- Student applies for housing through the recommended accommodation providers.
Students with disabilities can receive learning support and adaptations during their studies. The sending university and student must contact Disability Support Services when applying for exchange.
Course and Study Requirements
Lund University offers approximately 700 courses suitable for exchange students, covering a wide range of subjects.
When selecting courses, students are encouraged to pay special attention to:

- Restrictions and limitations
Courses are taught in English and Swedish.
Exchange students are expected to study full-time: 30 credits per semester, typically consisting of four courses of 7,5 credits each.
Please note: Full-time student status is required to apply for a residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency.
Lund University does not have a formal add/drop period at the beginning of the semester. This means there are limited opportunities to change courses upon arrival. It is therefore important that students select and get approval for their courses — including alternatives — before arrival, and ensure they are eligible for accreditation by their home university.
- 1 LU credit = 1 ECTS
- Undergraduate and graduate: 30 ECTS/semester, 60 ECTS/year
- Bachelor’s degrees: 3 years, 180 ECTS
- Master’s degrees: 1 year, 60 ECTS, 2 years,120 ECTS

- Courses in English per Faculty
Find courses per Faculty - Special Area Studies (SAS): Exchange students can apply for courses in subjects such as Swedish culture and society, European studies, regional courses and global issues. These courses typically do not require prior studies in the subject.
More about SAS courses - Swedish Language Courses for exchange students (SVEE): Available for exchange students (not for Danish and Norwegian students). These can be counted within or in addition to a full-time study load.
Swedish language courses - Introductory Swedish Course (SUSA): Offered during Orientation Weeks.
SUSA course information - X-courses: X-courses are short, flexible, credit-earning courses representing a number of different areas.
X-courses
Students with a background in Scandinavian studies or who have studied in a Nordic school system may be able to apply for courses in Swedish.

Note: If you find a course on a webpage stating ”Kan bara sökas inom utbildningsprogram” – the course is not available.
English: Recommended proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5/ TOEFL 90
Swedish: Required level is C1 or B2, depending on course, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR)
Admission requirements (prerequisites) for each course are listed on the website of the relevant department. Many courses require at least one year of full-time studies in the subject area.
- Faculty of Law:
- Undergraduate/Bachelor’s level: Minimum 1 year law studies.
- Graduate/Advanced level: Minimum 2.5 years (150 ECTS) of law studies.
- For double-degree students: Only law courses count.
- Faculty of Engineering:
- Engineering: Minimum 3 years of prior studies is recommended.
- School of Architecture: Minimum 3 years of prior studies in the subject; portfolio required.
- The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts (including Malmö Academies of Music, Art and Theatre): Prior studies in the subject required; portfolio and work sample are required.
Please note that course availability is limited in the following faculties and subject areas:
- Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM): Students applying through a university-wide agreement can be accepted to a maximum of 15 credits per semester at LUSEM.
- Faculty of Law: Course offerings at both Bachelor's and Master's levels are available in a limited capacity.
- Faculty of Medicine: A limited selection of non-clinical Master’s level courses is available for students on university-wide agreements.
- Faculty of Science:
- Physical Geography: Limited course offerings.
- Molecular Biology: Limited course offerings.
Courses are not available in the following areas:
- Bioinformatics
- Journalism
- Industrial Design (not available for students applying through a university-wide agreement)
- Fine and Performing Arts, (including Malmö Academies of Music, Art, and Theatre): These areas primarily admit students through specific faculty or departmental agreements.
Note: Not all courses taught in English are open to exchange students.
Student Accommodation
Exchange students are encouraged to apply for housing through several agencies.
The main providers are:
- LU Accommodation: Part of Student Services at Lund University, offering housing tips and support.
- AF Bostäder: The largest provider of student accommodation in Lund.
- BoPoolen: The housing service run by the Student Unions.

Students from outside the EU/EEA must apply for a residence permit for studies if staying longer than three months. Students should not apply for a visa. Visas are intended for short visits only.
Starting in 2026, visa-exempt visitors to the EU/Schengen Area must apply for ETIAS authorisation. This does not replace the Swedish residence permit process.
