Programme structure
Outline
The structure of the programme is flexible in order to increase your opportunities to tailor your studies to your own interests. Please note that you can only be admitted to courses for which you meet the entry requirements.
You may include up to 30 credits of completely free choice courses in your degree. This means that you can do an extended degree project of 45 or 60 credits. Alternatively, you can choose to take courses in biology or other subjects, for instance GIS, or to carry out smaller projects or internships within biology.
If you have any questions, please contact the programme’s study counsellor.

Frequently asked questions
The general track allows you to customize your degree by choosing from a range of courses in Biology. Please note that some courses have other prerequisites, for instance in chemistry or molecular biology, than the master’s programme in Biology. You design your own study plan with help from a study counsellor. The specialized tracks have more structured curricula and focus on specific career paths or research areas.
Absolutely. You will do your thesis project (30-60 credits) in a research group. If you choose a shorter thesis, you can e.g. do a smaller project or an internship. We highly recommend doing an internship which may provide valuable professional contacts.
The programme includes a substantial amount of scheduled activities, such as laboratory sessions, fieldwork, and seminars. The curriculum also emphasizes key transferable skills—such as group work, scientific writing, and critical thinking—that are highly valuable in many professional contexts.
During the first semester of your master’s programme, we will admit you for the courses. For the following semesters, you will need to apply for courses via universityadmissions.se. You will receive detailed information about this well in advance.
Normally, we don’t admit students from the waiting list after the admission results have been published.
