Minimum English language requirements

Most Lund University degree programmes and courses require what is called English Level 6 (advanced level) language proficiency, which is most often demonstrated in one of the following ways:

  • IELTS (Academic) total score 6.5 (with no section less than 5.5)
  • TOEFL internet-based score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test and a total score of 90
  • Through previous upper secondary studies or previous university studies

All approved tests and other ways in which you can prove your English proficiency at the University Admissions in Sweden webpage

Exchange students should check with their home university for the required English proficiency level to be nominated on an exchange to Lund University.

Do I need to sit an English language test?

Some students who have previously studied in English may be exempt from submitting formal test results to show their English proficiency. Please note that the exemptions must be met exactly as stated on the University Admissions in Sweden website.

Some programmes have higher English language requirements

Some programmes require a higher English language proficiency level, for example, 'English Level 7'.

In addition, a small number of programmes (in the subject area of English language) demand that all students demonstrate a specific level of language proficiency through a particular test, regardless of previous studies or mother tongue.

Always check the individual programme's admission requirements for details on English requirements.

Deadline for proof of English proficiency

The deadline for proof of English language proficiency to arrive at University Admissions in Sweden is the same as the deadline for receipt of supporting documentation.

Plan early to ensure that you receive and can submit your test scores and other proof by the deadline.
