Sociology: Emerging Inequalities

Course name: SOCN09, Sociology: Emerging Inequalities (Swedish name: Nya ojämlikheter). Advanced level master course (Second Cycle). 7.5 credits. Autumn semester. Language of instruction: English.
This course is offered as a stand-alone course and is also compulsory in the Master´s Programme in Sociology SASCO.
Are you fascinated by the changing patterns of inequality in our society? This course explores these changing patterns and looks at how different social factors create and maintain inequality.
The course uses theories, current data, and examples to help you understand different types of inequality, and you will examine present-day debates on the growing inequality in Western societies.
First, the course introduces the concept of inequality. It covers different aspects such as social class, geography, gender, and age. The course then looks at how inequalities can be studied on large, medium, and small scales (macro, meso, and micro) using sociological theories and methods.
By studying patterns of inequality, you will learn how social conditions like housing segregation and job market divisions push certain social classes and groups into the margins. The course ends with a case study on the "Swedish model," looking at how changes in the welfare state relate to different types of inequality.
Teaching will consist of lectures and seminars, and you will be assessed via an individual take-home exam.

Entry requirements
Admission to the course requires 90 credits in a social sciences subject comprising sequential courses. English 6.
Selection criteria
English language requirements
Most of Lund University’s programmes require English Level 6 (unless otherwise stated under 'Entry requirements'). This is the equivalent of an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 90.
