What Mariami says about the Master's in European Affairs
Introducing Mariami
Hi! My name is Mariami and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in European Affairs. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund University because of its prestigious reputation and everything my programme had to offer. When I began looking at universities, I already knew about Lund’s top ranking in Europe, its diverse community, and vibrant social life. That’s what drew me to explore their programmes, and I was especially impressed by the structure of the European Affairs programme and the flexibility it offers to partially customise my studies with electives, internships, or exchanges."
What are your first impressions of your programme? Does it meet your expectations?
"Coming from a different academic background, I didn’t have specific expectations about the programme. However, I’m really enjoying it and feel confident I made the right choice. One aspect I appreciate most is that we only have two courses per semester. This setup allows us to focus and dive deeply into each subject. The lectures, seminars, and practical work are efficient and well-structured. Although the course is intensive and covers a lot of material, I feel that the teaching style and activities help me make the most of my time and learn as much as possible."
What have been the highlights of your first months in Lund?
"Although Lund is a small town, the vibrant student life and diverse community make things exciting, with plenty of events around town to keep you busy. While meeting new people and exploring the town, the first few months have definitely been filled with many highlights. One of the outstanding experiences was attending the Lund Global Scholarship Ceremony, where I met dozens of talented scholarship recipients from around the world and had the chance to speak with university representatives. Another memorable experience was participating in the EU Days, hosted by the city hall. This two-day series of sessions focused on issues shaping the modern EU. It provided a great opportunity to hear the opinions of experts and politicians, especially for students studying related fields."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"Based on my experience with the programme, I think the teaching style in Sweden places more value on what you actually understand and learn, rather than on memorisation. Professors design courses in a way that allows us to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, whether through writing, seminars, or unique learning methods (such as simulating political negotiations in my case). This has been particularly valuable for me."
How international is your programme?
"My programme is very diverse, with students coming from various countries across Europe. This diversity significantly enriches class discussions, as students contribute ideas based on their unique backgrounds and experiences."
What are you most looking forward to in your programme?
"The programme covers all key areas of European studies, including politics, economics, law, and Europe’s role in the international community, providing a comprehensive understanding of European affairs. I’m excited to dive into each of these areas in detail and look forward to discovering the unique learning styles and insights each course will offer."
Stay tuned! A more comprehensive testimonial from this student will be published once they have completed their first semester at Lund and have more insights to share about their programme.
