National Conservatism in Contemporary Sweden: An analysis of core political ideas articulated by the Sweden Democratic party between 2020-2025

Author

  • Adam Clizbe

Summary, in Swedish

In this thesis, I examine the ideological foundation of national conservatism in contemporary Europe with a particular focus on the Sweden Democrats’ (SD) ideas in their contemporary discourse. Through a descriptive idea and ideology analysis this thesis analyzes how the party conceptualizes the ideas of Swedish nationality, culture, and migration in official party documents and communications by party officials. The qualitative material selection primarily focuses on the period 2020-2025, with complementary material outside this time-frame. By cumulatively merging the theoretical dimensions of conservatism, nationalism and populism, this thesis finds that the Sweden Democrats expresses national conservative ideas, through an ethno-symbolic understanding of nationalism, linked with a European social conservative morality with a populist framing.
