The Get Started Funding initiative aims to strengthen research engagement with selected partner universities in countries that have recently joined the Horizon Europe programme. It encourages collaborations across all academic disciplines that have the potential to lead to externally funded research projects and joint publications.

The funding is intended to cover costs associated with visits of participants from Lund University and the partner university in relation to:

  • workshops/meetings (such as facilities, meals and technical support)
  • travel
  • subsistence and
  • accommodation.

Salaries, consumables and scholarships are not eligible.

The funding in this competitive call amounts to a maximum of SEK 25,000 for collaborative activities with partners from

  • Switzerland
  • the United Kingdom and
  • Ukraine 

and a maximum of SEK 60,000 for activities with partners from

  • Canada
  • Egypt
  • New Zealand and
  • South Korea.

The funding is aimed at researchers with a doctoral degree employed at Lund University and research colleagues with a doctoral degree employed at the selected partner universities.

The application can only be submitted by your Lund University colleague. See 'The application process' below.

These are the evaluation criteria:

  • Quality and feasibility of planned activities and the alignment of the budget with the scope of the work
  • Strategic value of the research collaboration
  • Sustainability of the collaboration: potential for subsequent larger collaboration projects and/or to generate external funding.

Priority will be given to applications/applicants that:  

  • clearly demonstrate the potential impact of the proposed activity
  • involve or plan to involve also organisations other than universities from the broader research and innovation eco-system of one or both partner universities  
  • have not previously received Get Started Funding 

The application period is from 15 September to 5 November.

Activities can start after the award has been granted. They must be completed by 1 December 2026.

The GloHub doctoral student mobility initiative aims to strengthen engagement between Lund University and the three GloHub partner universities: 

  • National University of Singapore
  • UC Berkeley and
  • University of Melbourne. 

Doctoral students from National University of Singapore, UC Berkeley and University of Melbourne are invited to apply for a mobility grant to spend between 30 to 90 days at Lund University. The grant will enable the doctoral students to continue their education, pursuing their own research project during the mobility period, parallel to joining a research group and having a host supervisor at Lund University.

The mobility can take place in any field of research. 

The funding is a contribution to costs associated with travel and accommodation and other expenditures. Salary and visa costs are not included in the grant.

Each applicant is expected to contact a relevant research group individually to discuss opportunities to undertake the mobility period at Lund University. Applicants who are registered as doctoral students at the time of application and during the mobility at the following universities can participate:

  • National University of Singapore
  • UC Berkeley
  • University of Melbourne
     

The funding is expected to contribute to additional costs during the mobility, including travel, accommodation and subsistence costs. The recipients are expected to maintain their salary or other financial support from the home university during the mobility period.

The host department will receive the funding and pay for the flight ticket (up to a maximum of SEK 25,000) and accommodation (up to a maximum of SEK 12,000 per month).
 

To qualify, the participating doctoral student must:

  • Be registered as a doctoral student at the time of application and during the whole mobility period at
    • the National University of Singapore
    • the University of California, Berkeley, or
    • the University of Melbourne
  • not have obtained a doctoral degree
  • have an invitation letter from a supervisor at a host department/research group at Lund University
  • have a support/recommendation letter with confirmation of permission of the home supervisor and head of department or equivalent to undertake the mobility alongside the research/studies. 

Other conditions:

  • The mobility period can start from 1 January and must be completed by 1 December 2026.
  • The stay at Lund University must be for a sustained period and cannot be divided into shorter stays.
  • All the recipients will be insured through the Swedish State Business travel insurance by Kammarkollegiet.
  • Visa costs are not included in the grant.
  • Lund University does not charge any fees for the stay.
  • An interrupted stay entails a repayment obligation.

The call is competitive and a selection will take place. The following evaluation criteria will be used in the selection process: 

  • Motivation and commitment to participate in the initiative
  • Contribution of mobility to development of skills and research interests, and/or stimulation of new research ideas
  • Capacity for future collaboration
  • Balanced participation between the GloHub universities 

The application period is from 15 September to 5 November.

The mobility period can start from 1 January and must be completed by 1 December 2026.

The application process

The applicant doctoral student submits the application through a special application form. The application should include a short description of the aim of the visit, a motivation statement, an invitation letter from the host department at Lund University, a support/recommendation letter from the supervisor/home research group/department and a CV.  

It is mandatory to use the invitation letter template provided in the application portal. For the support/recommendation letter there is no template.

The assessment is carried out by representatives from the Global Engagement office at Lund University. Keep this in mind when submitting your application and use language that is appropriate for evaluators who do not possess specialist expertise in the project’s scientific field.
