Course name: SOCM05, Sociology: Master's (Two years) Thesis. (Swedish name: Sociologi: Examensarbete för masterexamen). Advanced level/Master Course (Second Cycle). 30 credits. Autumn and spring semester.
This course can be included in a Master of Science (120 credits) degree specialising in sociology.
To be eligible for a master course you must have passed the bachelor/undergraduate level.
The aim of the course is to give you an advanced understanding of sociological theory and research methods. This will help you take part in and manage complex projects in qualified work contexts, including research and development.
The central focus of the course is your composition of a master's thesis. Emphasis is placed on your ability to independently identify and describe a sociological problem and to apply relevant sociological theories and methods. You will also need to define your thesis project in relation to current research in the field.
The course ends with final seminars, where you will defend your master's thesis and also critically review a fellow student's thesis.
The assessment is mainly based on the quality of the finished master's thesis, but also on your thesis defense and critical review of a fellow student’s thesis.
