What Şelale says about the Master's in Language and Linguistics
Introducing Şelale
Hi! My name is Şelale and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Language and Linguistics. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
Why did you choose Lund University?
"As a linguist, I have always been interested in Nordic languages. Sweden is a country where I wanted to experience the culture and language personally. Lund University offers courses and academic events where you can explore the whole field of humanities with hands-on experience. The variety and academic dedication influenced my choice greatly."
What are your first impressions of your programme? Does it meet your expectations?
"General linguistics is an area I am familiar with. The variety and flexibility of courses pleasantly surprised me. Experimental methods are available and accessible to everyone."
What have been the highlights of your first months in Lund?
"Amazing parks and gardens, along with the serenity of the city brought me peace and calm in my routine. Lund is such a walkable city with great events for students to integrate into the culture. I loved exploring different parts of Lund on foot and participating in various social events. Especially taking part in an academic event where I got to use experimental methods in humanities personally."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style is what surprised me the most at Lund University. How one semester is organised in such a way that the students have enough time for courses while enjoying a social life still baffles me. I wish more universities used this system as it motivates learning and research."
How international is your programme?
"The Master's programme in Language and Linguistics has a pretty mixed group of students from different parts of the world. While it is great to meet such different cultures, it is actually rare to meet a Swedish person in the programme. Some days, I almost don't hear Swedish at all."
What are you most looking forward to in your programme?
"The thesis period! While it is sometimes scary to think about, I am looking forward to doing an experiment or collecting data for my own research. Writing a thesis at a place like Lund University, where a range of research methods are available to students, is pretty exciting."
Stay tuned! A more comprehensive testimonial from this student will be published once they have completed their first semester at Lund and have more insights to share about their programme.
