What Camilo says about the Master's in Geology
Introducing Camilo
Editor's note: When Camilo started programme his studies, he was studying Geology, Bedrock Geology, which was one of the three specialisation programmes that you could choose from at the time. However, as of the application round of autumn 2024, Geology has become one single programme.
Hi! My name is Camilo and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Geology. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund University because it’s ranked among the top universities in the world, and its geology programme has a strong reputation in geosciences. I also read that it’s the largest university in Sweden with a lot of international students, which made me excited to meet people from all over the world and experience different cultures and ways of thinking. On top of that, I wanted to experience Swedish society, especially its focus on sustainability and innovation."
What are you first impressions of your programme? Does it meet your expectations?
"I had high expectations for my programme because I saw that every course is built around the most important aspects of studying geology: fieldwork, lectures, lab work, and discussions or seminars. So far, the courses I took have had a great balance between these elements, which I’ve really enjoyed. I also appreciate the programme’s flexibility in letting me choose courses that align with my interests."
What have been the highlights of your first months in Lund?
"Some highlights of my first months in Lund include becoming a foreman at one of the student nations. It’s been a great way to meet people from all over the world and connect with students from basically every continent. I’ve also really enjoyed taking part in cultural events in Lund and Malmö, like Kulturnatten. On top of that, going on field trips around Sweden has been amazing, especially with the autumn colours."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style in Sweden has surprised me. During lectures, participation and interaction with teachers are encouraged. They make the classroom a safe environment without any pressure, so you feel comfortable asking questions and sharing your thoughts. I really enjoy the seminars and practical lab work included in the courses, as they enhance the learning process much more than a one-sided interaction between the teacher and students."
How international is your programme?
"The programme is quite international. In one of my courses, half of the students were Swedish, and the other half came from places all around the world. I liked this balance because it’s a great way to connect with Swedish people while also sharing and learning from other cultures."
What are you most looking forward to in your programme?
"I’m looking forward to completing all the courses required during the first year. I enjoy field trips the most, so I’m excited to visit and explore different places while learning geology and figuring out what I’d like to focus on for my thesis in the second year of the programme. The idea of researching and writing my thesis on something I’m passionate about really excites me, especially getting to use the labs and process samples."
Stay tuned! A more comprehensive testimonial from this student will be published once they have completed their first semester at Lund and have more insights to share about their programme.
