What Shaya says about the Maser's in Global Studies
Introducing Shaya
Hi! My name is Shaya and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Global Studies. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"For me, the main attraction was Sweden itself. Sweden was my choice of country and Lund University, as one of the highest-ranking universities especially in the field of social sciences, was the easy choice. The Lund Global Scholarship programme was also a deciding factor for me, as it was one of the best scholarships for non-EU students."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"The programme is very diverse and offers modern perspectives that I had not been familiar with before. It certainly meets my expectations as I think the design for the programme offers good theoretical knowledge as well as practical experience."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"I would say the very diverse student group is the best thing about the programme. The staff and professors are also very friendly and offer a lot of help and guidance. I also love that for the third semester, we are allowed to choose internships, electives, exchange, or fieldwork."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The style is very different to what I was used to, as a team of professors and PhD students teach one course. While you get to meet different scholars doing different work for each programme, you also have limited time with each professor which can make building a relationship with them hard."
How international is your programme?
"I would say about 50% of the class are Swedish and the rest are international, EU, and non-EU students."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Not yet, however, I will be doing an internship next semester and hope to do fieldwork during my thesis."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"If you have a passion for global issues and social sciences with more modern perspectives such as post-colonial school or feminist perspectives, the programme is perfect for you. The staff are also very helpful, and you will get introduced to so much current research being done by PhD students in different fields."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"I would say it is easy to make friends as you meet a lot of international students. It has its own hardships (e.g. opening a bank account can be tough), but Lund is also one of the most international cities in Sweden, so you won’t feel out of place."
What do you do in your spare time?
"I read books, watch TV shows, go on walks, hang out with friends, go to nations (social clubs), and the gym. I also sleep a lot because it is quite dark at certain times of the year."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"Meeting new people from around the world has been the most rewarding. Also, living by myself for the first time has been interesting."
