Introducing RuoXuan

About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"My undergraduate university is a modern institution that emphasizes the development of science and engineering disciplines, and often left me feeling inferior to other students. In contrast, Lund University is a comprehensive institution with a traditional and historical campus. Its social science faculty is in the city centre and occupies a historical and beautiful teaching building, resembling my dream university."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"I think it is very good. It includes theoretical and practical studying at the same time, which helps me understand sociology further. The curriculum has been comprehensive, covering a wide range of topics from classical sociological to contemporary theories. Faculty members are supportive and knowledgeable, leading to a positive studying environment."
What is the best thing in your programme?
"The Master’s programme in Sociology enhances both my theoretical comprehension and investigative skills. This is crucial for sociology students, benefiting their future careers or studies. I believe that applying classroom theories to analytical studies enhances our grasp of them."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The educational approach of Sweden differs significantly from that of China. Here, we have lectures and seminars. Professors impart new knowledge during lectures and then facilitate seminars where students engage in collective discussions; a teaching method I believe is highly effective for fostering a deeper understanding of the material."
How international is your programme?
"In my programme, there are students from various nationalities, and English serves as the primary language among us. Additionally, we have courses that are shared with the Social Anthropology programme, providing further opportunities to interact with international students. Everyone is friendly and open to discourse, creating a welcoming atmosphere where we can easily make friends with people from different countries."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Yes, of course. As a social science major, we have some homework that involves research and data analysis. In addition to this, during our third semester, we have the opportunity to participate in internships. This allows us to apply our knowledge in real-life settings, particularly if we choose to work in NGOs."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"I think a two-year programme is better than the one-year programme, as it offers more opportunities and time for students to consider their future, whether that be in academia or the industry. I think that the most attractive aspect of this programme is the opportunity to learn both theory and practical application, which was also my original intention."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"Firstly, you can experience a different culture from your home country. Sweden is a country with a long history where you can learn about the culture of the Nordics. Another important aspect for international students is that you can connect and make friends with citizens of multiple countries and learn about their cultures. Sweden is a country with a high English proficiency rate, so you do not need to worry about communication in daily life."
What do you do in your spare time?
"I like to cook some Chinese foods and share it with my friends. I believe that cooking is a good way to relieve homesickness, which keeps us in a good and positive mood. Apart from this, I have also travelled to different countries. With the EU visa in Sweden, it is very convenient for us to travel to other countries. So far, I have been to Norway and Germany, which are precious memories."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"To be honest, writing a complete article in English will be the highlight of my first year here. I never imagined I could accomplish this before coming to Sweden. Studying abroad has given me the opportunity to improve and challenge myself in many ways. I didn't know how to cook when I was in China, but now I'm a good cook! So, in my first year, I've not only improved my academic skills but my overall living skills as well!"
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"When you are hesitating among different universities, you should consider what your real needs are. I believe that the programme in Lund is a good choice for you, whether you want to pursue further learning or seek internship opportunities. Lund is also a friendly city where you can achieve a good work-life balance. You will spend unforgettable years in Lund."
