Interview with the Programme Director – Sustainable Energy Engineering
Hesameddin Fatehi – Director and teacher
About the programme and research in the field
How would you describe the Sustainable Energy Engineering Master's Programme at Lund University to a potential student?
"It is a comprehensive and forward-thinking course of study that equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make significant contributions to the field of sustainable energy. The programme is multidisciplinary and focuses on sustainable energy, offering both theoretical and practical learning experiences, and preparing students for diverse careers."
Why should students go to Lund to study this subject?
"Sweden is a leader in sustainable energy and environmental initiatives, offering students a unique opportunity to learn in a country that is at the forefront of sustainable practices. As a student at Lund University, one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious universities, graduates gain a respected qualification worldwide. The programme's global relevance, Sweden's leadership in sustainability, and Lund University's reputation offer a unique educational and cultural experience."
What does it take to be successful in the programme?
"To be successful in the programme, students need a combination of academic, personal, and professional attributes. A strong academic foundation, English proficiency, analytical skills, self-motivation, teamwork, and adaptability are key. I would like to emphasise teamwork and collaboration skills, since many assignments and projects require collaboration with peers, so being able to work effectively in diverse teams is important."
Is there any cutting-edge research in your department?
"Our department is leading research in fluid dynamics and renewable energy, benefiting students through direct involvement and up-to-date knowledge. Students benefit from this innovative research in several ways:
- Research-Driven Teaching
- Opportunities for Research Collaboration
- Master’s Thesis Projects, and
- Networking and Career Opportunities"
Can you give examples of student-industry interaction?
"Students often engage in projects that are developed in collaboration with industry partners through internships, guest lectures in various courses, industry visits and field trips, and Master's thesis in collaboration with industry. Events like career fairs or networking meet-ups provide platforms for students to explore employment opportunities and make industry contacts."
About Hesameddin
What is your academic background and recent research?
"I hold a PhD in Fluid Mechanics from the Department of Energy Sciences and currently serve as an Associate Professor at Lund University, Sweden. My recent research centres on developing mathematical models and conducting numerical simulations in various multi-physics problems within fluid dynamics, heat transfer, reacting and multi-phase flows. A significant part of my recent work includes investigating the safety aspects of emerging energy carriers and exploring hydrogen as a future energy carrier."
What courses do you teach?
"I coordinate and teach two graduate courses that align closely with my research expertise and interests. I teach Computational Fluid Dynamics and Biomass Conversion, emphasizing both practical applications and theoretical knowledge."
Do you have industry experience?
"I have collaborated closely with various industrial partners, particularly in projects related to fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and energy systems. My industry collaborations often involve participating in joint research projects and contributing to the development of innovative solutions in energy technology."
Challenges and inspirations in teaching international students?
"Teaching an international cohort brings the challenge of aligning diverse educational backgrounds and cultural perspectives while ensuring effective communication. However, this diversity is also the greatest inspiration. It enables a rich, multi-faceted learning environment, encouraging cross-cultural understanding and broadening everyone’s perspectives. It’s rewarding to see students from varied backgrounds collaborate, share insights, and grow together, both academically and personally."
