What Mark says about the Master's in Environmental Management and Policy

Mark Thiong'o from Kenya, alumnus of the programme, now working as a Process and Transformation Manager for the Eastern Africa Cluster at Maersk
What do you remember most from your studies at the IIIEE?
"My two years at the IIIEE were incredibly memorable. The EMP Master programme was immersive, engaging and challenging. The IIIEE is a world-class institute attracting the best talent both on the faculty and student side. My batch, batch 21, brought together 30 of the most diverse, intelligent, passionate and kind people I have had the opportunity to meet. Although the first year was mostly online and distance learning for most of the batch, the second year brought us all together to the melting pot that is our beloved 'Insti'. The classroom was always lively with a curriculum as much focused on sustainability as it was on fostering team work. I look back to our orientation at Kullen, the numerous field trips, the late nights in the study rooms, the fika culture and the movie nights hosted by Lars as only but a fraction of the incredible times at the 'Tute'."
What gets you out of bed in the morning and what makes you passionate about your work?
"My passion has always been to operate in a business environment that strives to deliver on the triple bottom line. My role at Maersk is that of a Process and Transformation Manager for the Eastern Africa Cluster. I am passionate about my role as it allows me to support the economic and social development of Eastern Africa, through trade. I get excited when I can play a part in providing transport and logistics solutions that empower an organic avocado farmer in Kenya to deliver their produce to markets all around the world – or supporting aid agencies to deliver food and medical aid to the people of South Sudan. I enjoy what I do because it is people focused, and in an organisation that is conscious of its responsibilities not only to shareholders, but to the environment and to our people."
How would you describe the IIIEE to a prospective student?
"There is no place like it. It will be one of the most challenging and most rewarding educational experiences of your life. The IIIEE is globally recognised for its research in sustainability. The cornerstone of this are the incredible staff and faculty whose expertise is only second to their passion for sustainability and their students. This is evident in the practical- and application-based curriculum and in the ilk of students the 'Insti' has been able to attract for over two decades."
