Description

Soft tissue sarcomas constitute a heterogeneous group of rare tumours with some 50 histopathologic types with different clinical characteristics and prognosis. Two thirds are highly malignant tumours and one third of the patients die due to metastatic disease. The care of sarcoma patients in the Southern Swedish health care region is centralised to the Lund Sarcoma Centre. We have a large data base with treatment and outcome data for sarcoma patients and a tissue bank with fresh frozen tumour samples. Using a translational approach, we study genetic and molecular profiles and link tumour characteristics to treatment and prognosis. The research is performed in collaboration with the Depts of Oncology, Pathology and Clinical Genetics. Findings are applied for refined diagnostics and prognostics in sarcomas with the aim of improving the care of patients with sarcoma.
