Terminologisk problematik i teknisk översättning

En översättningsanalys

Author

  • Juhan Luomala

Summary, in English

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse an HIV and AIDS related information brochure translated from Swedish to Arabic as well as to show possible consequences of an inaccurate translation. The reader will get a glimpse of what kind of problems a translator might face during translating technical terminology, as well as other issues that may occur in the translation process.

In order to have a scientific base for my thesis I have studied what authors such as Rune Ingo, Mohamed A. Saraireh, Eugene A. Nida and Dickins, Hervey and Higgins have written about translation theory. The used method has been to systematically go through the brochures sentence by sentence in order to identify the slightest differences in the material.

The problems the translator has stumbled on are mostly related to the translator's unfamiliarity in terminology concerning HIV and AIDS, and as most of the problems in the text are based on technical terminology I chose to focus on them in this thesis. Choices of words that do not convey the same message as the original material contains occur.
