The Ideology of Separatism : en Ideologianalys av det Skotska Självständighetsmanifestet

Author

  • Joel Bertilsson

Summary, in English

This essay seeks to see patterns in parts of the Scottish independence manifest, which was released in connection with the Scottish Independence Referendum, 2014. Three chapters are chosen for their relevance to the purpose. Ideal Types – an analytical tool in Ideology Analysis – are then constructed, based on the theoretical discussion of each ideology earlier presented, for nationalism, regionalism and separatism. The Ideal Types are then used to analyse the manifest and examine the patterns of each ideology. Nationalism is most commonly found around culture and cultural economy. Regionalism is most commonly found around arguments for strengthening the region and as a call to action (to vote “yes” in the referendum) for the citizens of the region. Separatism focuses on the economic opportunities of independence and economic disadvantages of remaining with Westminster in charge.
