Leo Flynn is appointed Honorary Doctor 2022 at the Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law at Lund University has appointed Deputy Director and Principal Legal Advisor at the European Commission Leo Flynn as the faculty's Honorary Doctor for 2022. Leo Flynn will be promoted at the doctoral degree conferment ceremony 3 June.

Leo Flynn is Irish and educated at Cambridge University and University College Cork. He is Deputy Director and Principal Legal Adviser at the Legal Service of the European Commission.

Leo Flynn and the Faculty of Law at Lund University have a long history together. Flynn began teaching in the Master Programme of European Business Law already in 1995, and was responsible for teaching two courses within the program. In 1997, he became 'référendaire' (legal secretary) for the Irish judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union, but has continued to teach at the Faculty on a constant basis. Leo Flynn has long been one of the favourite teachers in the Master Programme of European Business Law.

At research level, Leo Flynn is well respected in the field of general EU law and productive in terms of research. He is also recognized as one of the top world specialists in State Aid law. His academic profile is impressive. He has had articles on Union law published in several collections, including works published by Kluwer, OUP, Hart Publications and Wiley Publications. He has also written about Union law in a wide range of top ranked journals.

There is great value in Leo Flynn becoming an Honorary Doctor at the Faculty of Law in Lund. His strong connection to teaching and research at the faculty is an important asset that can be solidified, nurtured and developed. It is also important for both students and teachers at the faculty to develop professional contacts with the European Commission.

The doctoral degree conferment ceremony 2022 takes place in Lund Cathedral on Friday 3 June.
