What Adarsh says about the Master's in Language and Linguistics
Adarsh from India
How did you find out about Lund University and this programme?
"Since I have lived in Sweden for several years, I knew that Lund had a great tradition of linguistics going back a few decades. That's the reason it was always on my sort of radar. They have a great deal of programmes that interest me, so it was kind of my target to get to study and learn at Lund after I finished my Bachelor's at Malmö University."
What is your favourite course and why?
"I would highly recommend the course on meta linguistics, a lot of which is very philosophical and theoretical in nature. It aims at analysing the idea of language on a very deep and philosophical level, in a very meta sense. I think this course really stands out."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"It is probably the professors, who are not only great teachers but also authoritative voices in their respective fields and whose own papers and works form the bulk of the literature for certain courses. It is indeed a great feeling to be in their hands and have one's skills and abilities moulded. You also meet other students who are incredibly passionate about linguistics and have great coffee table conversations with them."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies that you think will help you in your future career?
"I have had some experience in areas outside of linguistics. I work as a part-time teacher at an international school and I find it extremely rewarding since I enjoy teaching and definitely consider it a possible career path."
Why do you think it is important to study languages and linguistics?
"Linguistics is a very vast field which intersects with many other disciplines: anthropology, sociology, psychology, history, speech therapy, political science, cultural studies, semiotics and philosophy. Language is perhaps mankind's greatest currency and studying it is the way to unlock answers to the things that puzzle society."
What do you think of living in the area around Lund?
"I live in Malmö, which is definitely cheaper than Helsingborg or Lund, with more options in terms of housing and flat sharing. It is also generally a great community. Anyone can fit in here, I think, because there's something for everyone. I think the culture is very diverse compared to Lund as well, considering Malmö is Sweden's third largest city and Lund is a smaller town. I can however say Lund is a vibrant student city and has a lot to offer for anyone regardless of their background or areas of interest."
What are you planning to do after your studies? What are your plans for the future?
"I would really like to get into a PhD. That's not always easy of course, but if you have some really good ideas and you're close with the professors, there are plenty of opportunities."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"To anyone who's considering starting a Master's in Linguistics, I would say go for it because it's really worth it! The programme has some great professors and researchers who are very well known in academia, so if you get to be in the class and be taught by them, it is indeed a privilege. I can't think of many universities where that happens."
