What Chelsea says about the Bachelor's in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science
Introducing Chelsea
Hi! My name is Chelsea and I'm the student ambassador for the Bachelor’s programme in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose to study at Lund University because it has consistently ranked as one of the best universities in the world, reflecting its strong commitment to academic excellence, research, and innovation. It offers over 140 English-taught degree programmes, attracting students from more than 130 countries and fostering a truly diverse and global academic community—one that, as a Canadian, I am proud to be a part of. The learning environment at Lund University enables students to develop critical and analytical skills, individually and collaboratively, that will equip students for future challenges. There are also endless opportunities for students to become involved in its vibrant student life, making it an exceptional choice for those seeking a well-rounded educational experience."
What are your first impressions of your programme? Does it meet your expectations?
"The BSc programme in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science has exceeded my expectations. Within the first month, we completed a week of fieldwork and embarked on several excursions around Skåne, allowing us to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings. We have acquired skills in mapping topographic points, surveying terrain, and compiling and analysing data. These experiential opportunities outside the classroom have broadened our understanding of the environment. It is exciting to imagine how our knowledge will continue to grow under the guidance of incredibly approachable, intelligent, and inspiring professors."
What have been the highlights of your first months in Lund?
"As a first-year student, there have been many highlights in the programme. It is part of an outstanding department that ranks 25th globally and 4th in the EU, according to the 2024 QS World University Rankings, setting the stage for an exciting academic journey. Within the first few weeks, we spent several days in nature learning about the processes shaping our Earth, and it was through this experience that I discovered what makes this programme truly unique: putting theory into practice outside the classroom. The fieldwork has also allowed my classmates and I to form close friendships, undeniably one of many highlights of the programme."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"Lund University offers a student-centred education, fostering independence and critical thinking skills. Lund’s international environment has enhanced my cultural awareness and ability to collaborate while studying and examining topics from various perspectives. The university’s approach to completing one course at a time allows for in-depth knowledge and sustained focus on the subject matter, a significant advantage for anyone with a strong passion for physical geography. The combination of lectures, independent studies, and group work also gives us a well-rounded and comprehensive understanding of the field. Furthermore, getting to know our professors on a first-name basis creates a relaxed atmosphere to ask questions and discuss new ideas. This openness has enabled me to develop valuable time-management skills and to balance academic responsibilities with extracurricular activities, such as joining the Faculty of Science student union and the Lund University Rowing Club."
How international is your programme?
"Two-thirds of students from the programme are international students. We are a cultural mosaic of students from many countries, including Australia, Canada, Croatia, Ireland, Italy, Russia, China, the UAE, and others. It is exciting that we share a common interest in learning about our planet and finding innovative solutions to combat climate change. The diverse and inclusive nature of the programme encourages the exchange of ideas and perspectives, enriching our academic experience and inspiring students to learn and grow."
What are you most looking forward to in your programme?
"The programme is interdisciplinary, encompassing a diverse array of subject matter. I am most excited to continue learning about biogeochemistry, climatology, geographical information systems and remote sensing, as these subjects require the utilisation of various methods in the field for environmental analysis. Finding sustainable solutions to combat climate change is becoming increasingly important, and the knowledge and skills we acquire through this programme will empower us to navigate these pressing challenges effectively. Overall, I look forward to continuing my studies at Lund University, fully confident that my education will prepare me for further specialisation and opportunities after graduation."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Working with geographic information systems (GIS) has provided valuable practical experience. While challenging, it allows us to analyse and visualize complex spatial data for diverse applications. Fieldwork has further complemented this skill set, involving mapping terrain, collecting data across various ecosystems, and conducting experiments that bridge theory and practice. This blend of technical knowledge and practical experience has deepened our understanding of environmental challenges and prepared us to address them effectively."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"Students should consider the Bachelor's programme in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science for its integration of theoretical and practical learning. The curriculum, delivered by lecturers who are experts in their respective fields, covers vital topics such as climatology, biogeochemistry, geophysics, GIS, mathematics, and environmental modelling. The supportive environment sets this programme apart – lecturers and staff genuinely invest in your success, offering guidance and encouragement at every step. This combination of expert teaching, hands-on experience, and genuine support provides a strong foundation for graduate studies or a smooth transition into the workforce."
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"As an international student at Lund University, I've found a true home away from home. The community is incredibly welcoming and filled with kind, intelligent, and genuinely supportive individuals who make the transition to life abroad seamless and memorable.
Lund perfectly balances small-town charm with rich historical character. Its vibrant student community brings the peaceful atmosphere to life, while its proximity to Malmö and Copenhagen adds convenience and opportunity. These qualities make Lund an inspiring place to live and study."
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my spare time, I serve as the Head of Corporate Relations for LUNA, the Faculty of Science Student Union, where I organise the ATLAS Career Fair and work with faculty to create student opportunities. Alongside balancing my studies, I stay active by going to the gym, hiking, spending time in nature, and exploring nearby cities. I also enjoy visiting cosy cafés and discovering unique treasures in Skåne's second-hand shops."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"Our first week of fieldwork in October was a highlight of my first year. We travelled to Hällevik, a charming village where we spent four days mapping topographic points, surveying terrain, and estimating carbon storage in trees. Staying in small cabins, we began each morning with a communal breakfast before collecting data at Listerhuvud Nature Reserve, just a short hike away, until 4 p.m.
In May, as part of the Ecosystems Analysis course, we also travelled to Öland, known for its unique landscapes and rich biodiversity. We focused on studying ecological processes, specifically examining the relationship between species richness, soil depth, and pH levels. This practical experience strengthened our field skills and deepened our knowledge of ecosystem-atmosphere interactions and broader ecological dynamics."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"My advice for prospective students is to remain open-minded and welcome new experiences. Lund offers many academic and social opportunities, so make the most of your time here. Engage actively with student organisations and campus activities, build connections with professors and professionals in your field, and don't hesitate to ask for help whenever needed. Also, be ready for Swedish winters – layer up and stay warm!"
